Volkswagen has announced the will be moving their North American headquarters to Virginia sometime next years. The move from Auburn Hills Michigan is expected to eliminate 400 jobs.
The move is scheduled to start sometime in April of 2008 and will be completed by the end of the year. 600 of the estimated 1,400 employees will remain in Auburn Hills in the call center and technical service jobs. 400 jobs will be moved to Virginia with about 150 Michigan employees moving to Herndon, he remaining jobs (400) will be cut.
With most of VW’s customers on the East and West coasts the move makes sense. The move is said to be part of the Volkswagen corporate strategy, which will connect the manufacturer with their customers. The $6 Million Dollars in incentives offered by Virginia’s Governor Timothy M. Kaine was also a factor.
Virginia has suffered from the loss of the Norfolk Ford Motor plants closing earlier this year and this will fill the void quite nicely.
Shares of Wolfsburg, Germany-based Volkswagen were really unchanged Thursday, down less than 0.1 percent to 150.22 euros ($204.52) in Frankfurt trading.
Volkswagen is the world’s fourth largest manufacturer of automobiles and is Europe’s largest automaker.
