Just 30 miles west of Detroit the cozy little town of Ann Arbor Michigan will be the nation’s first city to use LED’s (light-emitting diodes) for about 1,400 street lights. LED technology uses less than one half the energy of standard street light bulbs, estimated savings to the city is $100,000 per year.
Small chips incased in glass about the size of a matchstick head, have been utilized in many different electronic devises for decades. Red or even green LED lights have been the norm, but in the 1990’s a major breakthrough lead to the development of the white LED light.
It has been said that 22% of the electricity that is produced in the US is sucked up by all the lighting we use. Nationwide use of LED street lights and various other lighting could cut the consumption in half saving millions of dollars.
Michigan’s eco-friendly city of Ann Arbor will also be reducing the production of carbon dioxide and gases that are the blame for global warming effects, by removing 400 city vehicles from the streets.
