Michigan Freeway to Be Shut Down 2 Years

On February 25 I-75 will be shut down near the Ambassador Bridge for 2 years, making this Michigan road project the most costly and longest shut down in Michigan road construction history.

At a cost of nearly $170 million dollars, the project will be a great improvement on how traffic flows via I-75 and I-96 to access the Ambassador Bridge.  New walkways to connect the east and west sides of Detroit’s’ Mexicantown have been long over due since the split some 40 years ago when the freeway was put in.

During the shut down traffic will be routed all over town, I-94 and I-96 will take most of the traffic, but I-275, Telegraph Road and the Southfield Freeway will surely get their share of the traffic for the next two years.

Downriver Michigan residents as well as Michigan Tourists visiting Michigan will be hit by the I-75 shut down.  With the Ambassador Bridge being the nations busiest border passage to Canada, some 11 million crossing each year and over 110,000 vehicles traveling I-75 on a daily bases the shut down could impact the $115 billion in trade conducted in the area.

For more details of exactly what is being done and the cost breakdown and who’s paying for the project – check out the Detroit Free Press coverage here.
